Man’s Best Friend
verse 1315f
by Angela Lansbury
Why do they say dog’s man’s best friend?
Also a woman’s, girl’s or boy’s?
A dog stays your friend ’til life’s end
Through ups and downs, restores life’s joys:
It wags its tail when you arrive
It doesn’t mind if you are slow
It’s happy just to be alive
Its eyes say sorry you must go
It’s happy to gnaw on a bone
It’s glad to eat cooked or raw meat
Content in grand or modest home
It’s really pleased to get a treat!
It warms you when you’re feeling cold
It warns you like a smoke alarm
It guards, protects, so you feel bold
It sniffs - hears you don’t come to harm
A dog loves to go for a run
’though gladly settles for a walk
A dog likes action, games and fun
But listens, patient, to sad talk
A dog’s happy to trot along
A dog’s not scared to jump a wall
A dog supports you, right or wrong
Distract it - make it chase a ball
A dog runs tireless all the day
A dog defends you in a fight
A dog will listen and obey
When you’re half wrong - who nods you’re right?
A dog will run and fetch a stick
A dog’s loud bark’s worse than its bite
A dog is calming when you’re sick
A dog will help you sleep at night
A dog is friendly and it’s brave
As certain as stars’ eyes above
A dog sits, guards its owner’s grave
Who else gives loyal, endless love!

A famous dog which reputedly guarded it's owner's
grave was Greyfriar's Bobby in Edinburgh, Scotland. The dog is commemorated by
a statue.
