Why self-publish?

I didn't start out intending to self-publish my work. Like many writers, I'd dreamed of huge advances from a generous and grateful publisher. But after a while, like many writers, I realised that my voice wouldn't be heard unless my book was the next guaranteed blockbuster (Da Vinci Code/Shades of Grey/Dragon Tatoo), or unless I already had a high public profile. Or, ideally, both.

But friends, colleagues, and family were generous in their praise and encouragement, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. You can see the result here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008LD4SX8. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, but also rather humbling.
Self-publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing was remarkably straightforward, and I'd recommend it to anyone. I only wish I'd done it sooner.

If you'd like to follow my adventures (and yes, it is proving to be an adventure) here's a link to my brand new blog: http://howardmellowes.blogspot.co.uk/
